SGB slurry pump

Nov. 11, 2021

Slurries are special compounds used in many processing industries, including industry, food, dairy, beverage processing and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, among other sanitary industries. Slurries combine the properties of liquids and solids, so when it comes to determining the type and size of slurries must give special consideration to the pumps with which they are used.

1. What is slurry definition

2. the types of pumps that can be used for pumping slurries in industry

3. slurry pumping from slurry pump considerations

4. Factors to consider when selecting a slurry pump for a specific application

5. A brief overview of some of the industrial slurry pumps available for pumping industrial slurries provided by SGB

The details are as follows

1. What is a "slurry"?

A slurry is any mixture of a fluid (such as water) and a powdery solid. Slurries are used as a convenient way to handle bulk solids in the mining, steel processing, foundry, power generation and, more recently, frac sand mining industries. Slurries typically behave like viscous fluids, flowing under gravity, but can also be pumped as needed.

Slurries are divided into two main categories: non-settling or settling.

Non-settling slurries consist of very fine particles, giving the illusion of increased apparent viscosity. These slurries usually have low wear characteristics, but require very careful consideration when selecting the right pump, as they behave differently from ordinary liquids.

Settling slurries are formed by coarse particles, which tend to form unstable mixtures. Special attention should be paid to flow and power calculations when selecting a pump. Most slurry applications consist of coarse particles and therefore have a higher abrasion resistance.

Thick consistency

May contain large portions of solids

Usually settles out quickly

Requires more power to operate than a "water" pump

2. Types of slurry pumps that can be used to pump slurries for industrial use

Choosing the right pump for a slurry is critical to getting the most out of it. Basic pump components, such as impeller size and design, materials of construction and discharge configuration, must be considered to ensure that the pump can withstand the wear caused by abrasive slurry.Compared to low-viscosity liquid pumps, slurry pumps are typically larger in size and often require more horsepower to operate because they are less efficient.  Bearings and shafts must also be more robust and durable.

Many types of pumps are used to pump slurries, but the most common type of slurry pump is the centrifugal pump.  Centrifugal slurry pumps use centrifugal force from a rotating impeller to impinge kinetic energy on the slurry, similar to the way a watery liquid moves through a standard centrifugal pump.

3. Slurry pumps using notes

If you have experience pumping slurry, you will know that it is not an easy task. Slurries are heavy and difficult to pump. They can cause excessive wear on the pump and its components, and if they don't move fast enough, they can clog the suction and discharge lines. Most importantly, it can be a challenge to keep a slurry pump in use for a reasonable period of time. However, there are steps you can take to extend the life of your slurry pump and reduce the challenges of pumping slurry.

Find the best position that allows the pump to run as slowly as possible (to reduce wear) but fast enough to prevent solids from settling and clogging the piping

Reduce pump discharge pressure to the lowest possible point in order to reduce wear

Follow proper piping principles to ensure consistent and uniform delivery of slurry to the pump

Pumping slurry can present some challenges and problems, but with proper engineering and equipment selection, you can experience years of trouble-free operation. It's important to work with a qualified engineer when selecting a slurry pump because slurry can wreak havoc on a pump if not selected properly.

Choosing the right pump for the mud is essential to get the most benefit. The basic pump components, such as impeller size and design, construction materials, and discharge configuration, must be considered to ensure that the pump can withstand the wear caused by the abrasive slurry. Compared with low-viscosity liquid pumps, mud pumps are generally larger in size and generally require more horsepower to operate because they are less efficient. Bearings and shafts must also be more robust and durable.

Many types of pumps are used to pump mud, but the most common mud pump is a centrifugal pump. The centrifugal slurry pump uses the centrifugal force generated by the rotating impeller to impinge kinetic energy on the slurry, similar to the movement of an aqueous liquid through a standard centrifugal pump

4. Factors to consider when selecting a slurry pump for a specific application

Slurry pumps, also known as liner pumps or dredge pumps, are centrifugal pumps used to convey fluids containing highly abrasive solids, such as flotation, slag, coal or ore suspensions and sintered sludge, or sand and gravel mining. They are mainly used in applications where solids are present in the fluid stream. They are particularly susceptible to erosive wear. Therefore, they are designed in such a way that their wetted surfaces are hardfaced by deposition welding and exposed to worn parts such as rings, bushings, discs, housing inserts, impellers and all types of liners that can be easily replaced with new ones. Therefore, they must be fairly inexpensive and consist of materials that are particularly resistant to wear or abrasion and wear. Slurry pumps should be selected according to the application and materials to ensure trouble-free performance when handling highly abrasive or corrosive liquids.

A brief overview of some of the industrial slurry pumps suitable for pumping industrial slurries offered by SGB

1.vertical pumps:

ZJL Series Vertical Slurry Pump

Vertical slurry pumps are highly configurable pumping equipment designed to reduce maintenance and operating costs.

Compared with horizontal pumps, they require less floor space, and wear-resistant parts can be made of hard metal or rubber. The vertical slurry pump is a vertical axial suction single-stage single suction centrifugal structure. It is mainly composed of impeller, volute, rear liner plate, shaft sleeve, support, support plate, shaft, bearing, bearing body and other parts. The materials of impeller, volute, rear liner plate and other parts in contact with the slurry vary according to the slurry characteristics. The impeller and shaft are connected by threads, and the volute, support and bearing body are connected by bolts. The pump shaft and motor can be driven directly by coupling or belt. The vertical pump has no circumferential peak structure, and the bearing is lubricated with grease.

2.horizontal pumps

ZJ Series Horizontal Slurry Pump

Horizontal slurry pumps are suitable for various slurry transportation applications.

Because the wear parts are made of hard metal or rubber, horizontal slurry pumps are generally larger, more powerful and provide higher capacity than vertical slurry pumps.

3.horizontal centrifugal pump

DT Series Medium Horizontal Desulphurization Pump

DT series medium-sized horizontal desulfurization pumps are designed as horizontal, single-shell, single-stage, single-suction, bracket or suspended structure, with a maximum flow rate of 1000m 3 /h, and a general head of 9-80m. It can be used as a limestone slurry transfer pump, gypsum discharge pump, sewage pump and so on. All wet parts are made of high chromium alloy materials GLH-5 and GLH-6 (equivalent to A49). According to the technical scheme, the use of optimized structural design and special modified materials, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant, can achieve the desulfurization of the horizontal desulfurization pump and prolong the service life of the desulfurization pump.

4.submersible slurry pump:

TL Series Vertical Pit Desulphurization Pump

The submersible mud pump is designed for a wide range of applications. With its sturdy design, the submersible slurry pump can easily move mud, sand and other materials.

5.casing of centrifugal pump

Pump Volute Casing

The pump volute casing is the most common type of centrifugal pump. Its characteristic feature is the volute-shaped pump casing which is typical for single-stage centrifugal pumps. The pump volute casing is specially designed to constrict the fluid from the pump inlet, direct it into the impeller and then slow and control the fluid before discharge. A pump volute casing is a curved funnel that increases in area as it approaches the discharge port. The volute of a centrifugal pump is the casing that receives the fluid being pumped by the impeller, maintaining the velocity of the fluid through to the diffuser. As liquid exits the impeller it has high kinetic energy and the volute directs this flow through to the discharge. As the fluid travels along the volute it is joined by more and more fluid exiting the impeller but, as the cross sectional area of the volute increases, the velocity is maintained if the pump is running close to the design point.
